Dashboard Design

Overview

The Fringe Hair Salon dashboard is a hypothetical design project that I undertook over a weekend to challenge myself with a real-world business scenario. The goal was to create an intuitive PoS system for a salon, focusing on enhancing operational efficiency and providing comprehensive sales insights. The project explores both the operations and sales perspectives, ensuring seamless management for salon owners and staff.

The dashboard design incorporates user-centric features such as inventory status, client volume tracking, service efficiency metrics, staff attendance, and sales tracking. These insights were aimed at helping salon managers to streamline operations, make data-driven decisions, and optimise resource allocation.

Challenges

The primary challenge was to design an interface that would simplify complex operations and provide value to different user roles within the salon. Consideration was given to:

  • Multiple user personas: From salon managers to staff members, each user required access to relevant data points. Understanding these personas through an empathy map guided the design decisions.

  • Simplifying complex data: Displaying operational and sales data in a digestible format while ensuring that key metrics (like inventory levels, sales, client volume) could be quickly identified at a glance.

  • Consistency and navigation: Maintaining consistency in the user interface while allowing for clear navigation across different features such as bookings, inventory, staff management, and cash-up.

Outcomes

The final design includes two key sections: Operations and Sales.

  1. Operations Dashboard:

    • Displays service efficiency, average session duration, staff attendance, hygiene compliance, equipment status, and inventory tracking.

    • Inventory status features critical product levels, helping salon managers to stay ahead of low stock or restocking needs.

    • Metrics such as client volume and service efficiency provide insights into peak hours and optimise scheduling for faster services.

  2. Sales Dashboard:

    • Highlights daily sales revenue, average monthly sales trends, and successful vs. canceled bookings.

    • Analyses top-selling products and services, helping salon owners make informed decisions on inventory and marketing strategies.

    • Walk-in vs. booking metrics help adjust staffing levels and optimise resource management based on peak times.

By tackling this project, I refined my approach to dashboard design and user interface systems for small businesses, focusing on clarity, efficiency, and an engaging user experience. This experience has contributed to my growth in designing intuitive, data-driven interfaces that solve real-world problems.
